BACKGROUND NOTE: In discussing the four gospels--Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John--theologians often use the phrase synoptic gospels when referring to Matthew, Mark, and Luke. These three gospels are grouped together because of their similarity in structure and content, John being quite different in both respects.
