Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit,
says Yahweh of hosts.
Lift up your heads, O gates,
And be lifted up, O ancient doors,
That the King of Glory may come in !
BACKGROUND NOTE: The first two questions in this quiz open a complicated issue of interpretation. Beginning as early as Julius Africanus (ca. A.D. 230), theologians through the centuries have debated various explanations for the two different genealogies of Jesus in Matthew and Luke. Many solutions have been proposed. One of the most popular is that Matthew presents the genealogy of Joseph, while Luke gives the genealogy of Mary. However, prima facie the two accounts both seem to trace the genealogy of Joseph (see Matt. 1:16 and Luke 3:23). If this is the case, it is possible to reconcile both accounts using the law of levirate marriage (Deut. 25:5-6) and the law of inheritance (Num. 27:8-11). Using this approach, perhaps the best view takes Matthew's account as Joseph's legal line of descent and Luke's as Joseph's natural line of descent. This entire issue is discussed in great detail in an original paper presented on this Web site: "'Write This Man Childless!' The Crisis in the Davidic Dynasty and the Genealogies of Jesus."
